Colton Wright became the first Blount County running back to rush for 1,000 yards this season, and Heritage powered away from Powell in the second half for a 46-21 win Friday on the road.
The win clinches a playoff berth for the Mountaineers (3-4, 3-0 Region 2-5A),who can now finish no lower than fourth in league play. With Maryville and William Blount automatically qualified for postseason play in Class 6A, Alcoa clinching no less than second in Region 2-3A with Friday’s 38-7 win over McMinn Central, all four Blount County schools are now through to the playoffs.
Unofficially, Wright finished with 135 yards rushing against the Panthers, bringing the junior’s total to 1,085 yards with three regular season games remaining.
Heritage’s running man set a school record for rushing touchdowns in a game with five against South-Doyle earlier this season. The Heritage record for yards rushing in a season is 1,500 yards, held by former Mountaineer Darren Sharp.
