Week ending Mar. 4
Maryville’s John Garrett and Alcoa’s Katie Stubblefield were easy selections as the Aubrey’s/Blount Press Row Players of the Week for the week ending Mar. 4.
Garrett put Maryville back in the state tournament with a 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining in overtime as the Rebels edged Science Hill, 60-59, in a thriller of a sectional Monday night in Johnson City. Garrett finished with 16 points, and Maryville now awaits this weekend’s draw for the Class AAA boys’ tournament March 13-16 at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. The Rebels are back in the state tournament for the first time since winning it all in 2007.
In a season where she became the fourth player in school history to reach 1,000 points over the course of her career, Stubblefield finished strong in a 45-36 sectional loss at Elizabethton. The senior and Carson-Newman signee capped her Lady Tornado career with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. All-time leader Koral Stache, Stubblefield, Dawn Marsh and Kara Harris are the only Lady Tornadoes to achieve the 1,000-point plateau.
