On a night weather delays wreaked havoc on games across the region, William Blount found just the necessary ingredient for victory Friday night.
Governor running back Tyler Key, the Barley’s/Blount Press Row Player of the Week, supplied the touchdown and much of the muscle on the game-winning drive as William Blount knocked off rival Heritage, 28-20, on the road.
Key went in from 7 yards early in the fourth, and the defense held the rest of way as the Governors extended their win streak over the Mountaineers to 19 games. Key, a senior, carried eight times on the 11-play march to get William Blount a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
For the night, Key rushed for 134 yards on 26 carries, adding touchdown runs of 4 and 2 yards earlier in the game.
The Governors ran for 306 yards on 47 carries and four touchdowns as a team, with Tommy Myers carrying 11 times for 91 yards and a 16-yard scoring run. William Blount quarterback Austin Myrick carried nine times for 88 yards and a two-point conversion run following the Key go-ahead score.
