This one was a layup.

Absent from the William Blount backfield due to injury the first three games, Devin Fair returned to deliver a performance we won’t soon forget against rival Heritage on Friday.

The Governors and Mountaineers battled in a game for the ages, William Blount rallying in the closing minutes to upend the Mountaineers, 50-48, at Mike White Field.

Fair, the Barley’s/Blount Press Row Player of the Week, was a big, big part of the why.

The Governor senior rushed 208 yards and scored four of William Blount’s seven touchdowns in his 2014 running-back debut. Fair was limited to defensive end prior to Friday, a broken hand negating his ability to help the Governors out of the backfield. Making up for lost time, Fair scored on runs of 1, 53, 7 and 1 yards.

Several players from both teams helped make this one a classic, including Governor place-kicker Will Hodgson, whose 34-yard field goal with a minute remaining produced the winning points.

Nobody got off like Fair, though. Nobody.

The short list: WB quarterback Austin Myrick, 172 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns off the bench; WB receiver Joel Graham, a touchdown, more than one clutch catch and the game-ending tackle with the horn sounding; Hodgson, under pressure, fired right down the middle; Alcoa running back Jaquez Tyson, 200-plus yards rushing, four touchdowns; the Maryville defense, holding a powerful Hardin Valley team to a field goal.
