Maryville plays host to the District 4AAAA tournament early next month.

Considering what the Lady Rebels and Heritage Lady Mountaineers have been up to this season, you’re going to want to see some of it. The two longtime rivals have staged a pair of barnburners this season, the last one an over-the-top, Ellah Wheelon walk-off in the ninth to hand the Lady Mountaineers a 5-4 win.

“I knew it was going to be a battle like that,” Heritage coach Jeff Sherman said. “They had us, 8-1, over there and we came back and won it, 11-10.

“We got up, 4-0 (last week), and I thought, ‘We’re good.'”

Maryville punched back with a pair of runs each in its half of the fifth and sixth. Wheelon’s deep blast to right-center scored shortstop Kylee Thomas from second to break a 4-4 tie after two extra frames. The winning rip ended an impressive showing in the pitching circle for both teams, Heritage’s Izzie Hayes and Jordan Geary and Maryville’s Isabel Allen and Rebekah Duck leaving no doubt they’ll be ready for postseason in a couple weeks.

When it mattered most, Wheelon, a sophomore, was clutch.

“I was just trying to get a base hit to move the runners,” the Lady Mountaineer third baseman said. “I was nervous, but never give up.”
