The 2018 high school football jamboree at William Blount is a week away now.

As Blount County’s four schools continue preparations, we dropped in on Alcoa’s Tornadoes on Tuesday. The defending Class 3A champion acquitted themselves well in a dual-practice with Knoxville Catholic.

Senior quarterback Walker Russell looked especially sharp, the BlueCross Bowl offensive most valuable player completing a sweet scoring toss to sophomore tight end Tristan Blankenship.

Backs K’Vaughn Tyson and Kareem Rodriduez flashed behind a retooled offensive line. Rodriguez scampered to the end zone for one of four Alcoa touchdowns during the 11-on-11 portion of the practice. Sophomore speedster Roy Jones Jr. is one to watch. Just saying.

The big questions for the Tornadoes entering 2018 are on the defensive side of the ball. They looked pretty good there, too, holding the Irish scoreless in the abbreviated 11-on-11 session.

Enjoy this quick look at the champs. It won’t be long now.
