From Brock-toberfest to the Wright stuff, BPR salutes the 2015 statistical winners

We’d need a waiver on the age requirement, but Kelby Brock would be a great guy to run for president.
Bet Donald Trump never averaged 26 yards per catch in high school.
The Maryville senior Brock and Heritage junior Colton Wright were runaway winners in their respective statistical categories as inaugural members of the Blount Press Row Stat Sheet Stuffers Club.
Also part of the inaugural class are Alcoa place-kicker Ben Smith; Maryville quarterback Dylan Hopkins; William Blount linebacker Tommy Myers; the Tornado defense; the Rebel offense; Tornado defensive lineman Jonathan Decker; Maryville defensive back Josh Yoakum; Rebel punter Luke Orren.
Brock’s stuff was crazy. The Rebel wide out seldom saw less than double coverage and averaged only 4.1 catches per game. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Brock responded with 41 catches for 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 25.7 yards per reception.

After Maryville’s 35-7 win over Warren County in Thursday’s Class 6A playoff opener, Brock needs three catches and a single receiving touchdown to own just about every Rebel record for receiving on the books. The records for career and single-game receiving yards are already his.
Brock broke former Rebel and current Alcoa offensive coordinator David Sweetland’s single-game mark of 175 yards twice this season with a pair of 185-yard efforts against Jefferson County and Hardin Valley.
“I just go out there and work extra hard,” Brock said. “I take pride in my route running. I know I’ve got to get open.”
Wright torched South-Doyle for better than 200 yards and a school-record five rushing touchdowns in a 57-56, Heritage overtime win. Prior to the outburst, Wright had less than 200 yards rushing through the Mountaineers first two games.
Two weeks later, he all but matched the effort, running for four touchdowns and recovering his own fumble in the end zone for a fifth for a second school record for total touchdowns in a game. Then he really cranked it up.
In the regular season finale against Halls, Wright went past former Mountaineer Darren Sharp’s record of 1,500 yards rushing in a season. The 6-foot, 188-pound Wright finished with 1,563 yards through 10 games, averaging an impressive 7.1 yards per carry.
Region wins over South-Doyle, Gibbs and Powell qualified the Mountaineers for the Class 5A playoffs. Heritage fell in the opener last week at Morristown West, but not before Wright bid farewell to a breakout season with his 27th rushing touchdown, his fourth Mountaineer record of the 2015 campaign.
