Kelby Brock cemented his place as the county’s top receiving threat last Friday.
The Maryville High School junior, the Barley’s/Blount Press Row Player of the Week, ripped open Sevier County’s defense for five catches for 101 yards and four touchdowns as Rebels roused themselves from a wacky start to the second half en route to a 62-28 win over the Bears in a Class 6A second round game.
Brock accounted for three of his scores, covering distances of 22, 4 and 53 yards, respectively, in the first half, the defending champion Rebels (12-0) reaching intermission with a 34-0 lead. The Bears rallied on three consecutive Maryville turnovers the first two minutes of the second half. A Maryville fumble on the first play from scrimmage was followed with another on the ensuing kickoff, followed by a fumble on the first play of the next Rebel possession.
Sevier County put a touchdown behind each to trim the deficit to 34-21 with nine minutes to play in the third.
Senior running back Jaylen Burgess steadied the Rebels with 77-yard touchdown sprint down the left side one possession later. Backfield mate Dylan Shinsky followed with a 40-yard scoring run. Brock all but put it away on the final play of third, his fourth score of the night, a 14-yard toss from sophomore Austin Ensley, boosting the Maryville advantage to 55-21 with a quarter to play. Ensley and Maryville starter Tyler Vaught found Brock for two scores each.
Maryville hosts Science Hill in a quarterfinal matchup on Friday. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
