The last time a Heritage team displayed this kind of firepower, former Mountaineer star Lee Strickland was named Blount County Player of the Year.
Heritage quarterback Dustin Richardson, the Barley’s/Blount Press Row Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 7, hit his first two passes in a 50-14, homecoming win over Bearden on Friday. The second, a 70-yard touchdown strike to receiver Dustin Gardner, proved only the beginning in a wild night for the Mountaineers.
Richardson, a junior, finished the evening with a sizzling 274 yards passing, with a second touchdown throw to Gardner of 58 yards and a third to Hunter Terry of 37 yards. Later in a 43-8 Heritage first-half, Richardson kept around left end from the 1-yard line for another Mountaineer score.
The 50 Heritage points tied Strickland’s 1982 Mountaineers for the single-game school record.
