Rankin, Quarles named respective coaches of the year

Blount County football was well represented with the release of the Tennessee Sports Writers Association All-State Teams on Tuesday.

Alcoa’s Gary Rankin was named Class 3A Coach of the Year after leading the Tornadoes to the school’s 13th state championship earlier this month. The title was Rankin’s record-tying 10th as a head coach.

Alcoa placed nine Tornadoes on the Class 3A team.

Maryville’s George Quarles was named Class 6A Coach of the Year after leading the Rebels to a record 14th state title in the playoff area of Tennessee high school football. The championship was a record-tying 10th for Quarles, sharing the mark with Rankin and former Brentwood Academy coach Carlton Flatt.

Maryville placed four Rebels on the Class 6A team.
